Privacy and your content
What the creator processes, what the exported file contains, and where data can be stored.
Updated 14 October 2026
Content is processed in your browser
The Cognitle Reader creator processes pasted text and HTML on your device. Editing and standalone export run locally. If you connect an account and choose Save to server in the block Creator, Cognitle sends the document JSON, metadata and included assets to its document service. Content is not sent to an AI service.
Hosted saves are explicit unless you enable autosave for the open document. Autosave sends changes after a two-second pause in editing and turns off when switching documents or reloading the page. Optional local draft recovery can save work on your device. Keep a downloaded backup before leaving.
Account sign-in
If you set up account sign-in, Cognitle stores your email, owner identity and a password hash on the hosting server. Email is used as a sign-in identifier; verification and email password-reset messages are not available in this version. You can reset your password with your existing owner access token. Password sessions expire after one hour; changing your password invalidates other password sessions. Authentication requests are rate limited.
Optional hosted documents
Hosted documents are private by default. Owners can grant viewer or editor access to existing accounts or create expiring viewer links. Anyone holding a viewer link can read and download the current document without signing in. Revoking access stops future server requests but cannot erase already loaded or downloaded copies. Sharing stores account-role assignments and hashes of link secrets; plaintext link secrets are shown only when created. The service stores document content, metadata, embedded assets and revision history on the hosting server. Restoring an older version creates a new revision and retains the existing history. Connecting sets a one-hour session cookie; access tokens are not saved in browser local storage. Disconnect ends the browser session. Deleting a hosted document removes its current content and revision history from the active database; hosting backups may retain earlier copies according to the hosting operator’s backup policy.
Website requests
Your browser requests the website’s pages and assets from its hosting provider. Choosing a showcase template also requests that template file. The hosting provider may process ordinary request information, such as IP addresses, request times, and requested paths, for operating and securing its service.
This version does not include application analytics, advertising trackers, or an email collection form. This description concerns Cognitle’s application code; the hosting platform has its own practices.
Optional creator drafts
Save draft stores the document on this browser only when you choose it. Drafts may include text, images, and a font. They are not encrypted and can be accessed by someone using the same browser profile. Delete saved draft removes this stored copy. Keep a downloaded backup because browser storage can be cleared.
Reader preferences
The exported reader attempts to store presentation preferences in browser local storage. This includes choices such as font, size, theme, and reading mode. Document text is not included in that preference record.
You can reset the current reader to its document defaults. Browser settings can remove stored site data. Local-file storage support and isolation depend on the browser.
The file you share
An export contains the document text, its title and optional author, starting preferences, and the reader controls. It is not encrypted and has no access revocation. A recipient can copy, edit, or forward it.
Check the contents before sharing. The file itself cannot verify who created it or whether someone later changed it.
External links
External sites are contacted when you choose their links. Those sites apply their own privacy practices. The reader does not need them to display its included content.
